I love this raincoat! All the testers have done amazing! I just have a question about the sizing, how much ‘ease’ is in the pattern? Depending on the amount of ease would depend on what size I would need to cut.
Many thanks,
Sharon x
Hi Sharon, the finished garment measurements are included in the pattern instruction. You can see them and make a decision then. The jacket is meant to be for winter and has quite a bit of ease to accommodate a sweater underneath. If you are not planning to wear it for winter with multiple layers, you can go down a size or two accordingly, but you will see the ease in the instructions.
Hi Kennis – just wondering if it would be possible to put the testers’ names under their photos. It’s a bit of a guessing game trying to work out which name belongs to which tester! If that’s not possible, could they be listed in order of the photos instead of alphabetically?
Can it be done without lining, using only canvas or jeans fabric? I’d like one to wear in Sprong or even in summer when it begins to be colder at night.
Hi Nathalie, you can skip the lining and just use the facings, but there are no instructions for making the jacket without the lining.
Love the jacket! Classic, clean lines. Your designs have a timeless quality. Looking forward to making this jacket.
Hi Deb, look foward to seeing your jacket!
Do you think it would be possible to add a poach pocket at the back? Is there a seam on the outside of the jacket at the tunnel? It should look something like that. I hope it’s OK to post a link:

Hi Dette, there is a side seam you could use to make the pocket.
Kennis, I’m so excited about your pattern and Discovery Fabric’s plans as they are a Canadian co. They understand winter cold so I have the same question as Victoria in MN. What can I do about preventing cold going up the sleeves? I’d like to put a ribbed cuff inside the sleeve but am not sure how to do this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi Mary, you would have to “hack” the pattern to include ribbed cuffs. But it’s not terribly difficult. You would duplicate the bottom part of the sleeve lining pattern (maybe about 10-15 cm from the hem) and in the same spot, you will add a seam so you can insert this duplicated part in the lining. This extra piece can have a cuff.
If you make this into a very long jacket, would the pockets stay in the same place? Would that look ok. I wouldn’t be putting the top pockets on.
Hi Denise, if you make it long, the pocket should stay in the same place, because otherwise, your hands wouldn’t be able to reach the pocket. So you would lengthen below the pockets.
Discovery Fabrics specializes in performance fabrics, and will be making a video shortly to show many options for this jacket, from waterproof breathable shells to lightweight or super warm linings. Stay tuned! When done, it will be available on the Discovery Fabrics Youtube channel as well as in the Itch to Stitch sewing group on Facebook.
Thank you for making the videos! They are so informative! For everyone’s convenience, here is the video for the outer fabric: https://youtu.be/bgEdWahh_Cw and here is the video for the lining: https://youtu.be/1kI0oWzVPug
I appreciate this tutorial. I’ll definitely tune in and check it out. Good to know where I can source out fabrics.
All the jackets look amazing! ❤️ I’m a bit confused with the cuffs. They all look too big, and I was wondering if that could be solved by using a stretch rib knit, or by putting elastic into a cuff without a button? I live in MN , so this is a wonderful jacket for me. I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Thnx.
Hi Victoria, you would have to add a cuff sewn into the sleeve lining. You would duplicate the bottom part of the sleeve lining pattern (maybe about 10-15 cm from the hem) and in the same spot, you will add a seam so you can insert this duplicated part in the lining. This extra piece can have a cuff.
I agree with some of the posters: I would like to know what type of fabric was used.
Hi Patty, the info is added. Frankly, it’s not awfully informative because my testers mostly use fabric from their stash that could be from all over the world years ago, and they are not knowledgeable of the content either (for example, “100% polyester” does not mean a whole lot as the high-performance fabrics can be 100% polyester and Minky fabric can be 100% polyester too). However, I think you will glean more information by watching the videos that Discovery Fabrics created specifically for this jacket: https://youtu.be/bgEdWahh_Cw (outer fabric)

I agree, all look amazing. It would be helpful to post the type of fabric each one used for their jacket.

Good looking practical coat! It would be helpful to me if the testers indicated the size and fabric type they used.
Hi Laura, I am afraid I cannot tell you the size as many of the testers are not comfortable disclosing their sizes (they are not professional models and are only people who are helping out. If I require disclosing sizes, many of these wonder testers would not test). As for fabric, the info is added above. They all look amazing! A wonderfully practical and stylish coat for all seasons. I hope it’s not too difficult to make.
Hi Sue, I would say if you are good at following instructions and persistent, you will be able to make one. The instructions do walk you through a step at a time. It’s not a project that you can start int he morning and wear it in the afternoon like some of the easier t-shirts, etc. But it’s so worthwhile though. 🙂
I agree, they all look amazing!
They all look wonderful! Great jacket pattern.
