New Pattern: Kauai Top
What’s better than wearing a lightweight, breezy, woven top in the heat of the summer? (OK, maybe being buck naked would be better, but that’s not socially acceptable to wear nothing in public yet.) With summer approaching fast in the Northern Hemisphere, I created this pattern of a cute sleeveless woven top to keep you comfortable while looking beautiful.

As with other woven garments in the Itch to Stitch shop, the Kauai Top comes in multiple cup sizes so you have a better fit without bust adjustment. The pattern also comes in a sleeveless option (view A), as well as a sleeveless with ruffles option (view B).

You can pair the Kauai with some shorts or jeans. In the event of a cool evening, you can wear a cardigan or jacket over this sleeveless top. It is completely layered friendly!
My testers are looking awesome in the Kauai Top regardless of height, age, size and shape. Let’s look at their great handiwork!
The Kauai Top is designed to be made with lightweight woven fabric. I found that cotton voile or batiste is perfect for this top. Also, use lightweight woven, lightweight weft insertion or lightweight tricot interfacing.
The closure in the center front uses button loops. I love that they add a delicate look to the Kauai Top.

The shirttail hem of Kauai is also a feature that I like. It can be longer in the front and back, but the sides still don’t look too long.

Are there any videos on the ruffled armhole option? I simply can’t understand how the binding works with this option. Help! I would have thought you would attach the binding to the armhole and then attach the ruffle when topstitching. ???
I am afraid there’s no video for the ruffle option. But trust the instructions; you do put the ruffle before the binding. Many times, people don’t understand a technique until they try it step by step first. Then the light bulb comes on.

Any suggestions on adding sleeves? I’d love to make this as office-wear, and sleeveless doesn’t happen there, and my upper arms… Also, I would love it if the fabric types used by the testers were included. I am hapless at picking the right fabric. Would double gauze work – my double gauze stash is overflowing. Thanks!
Thank you for your feedback and interest. I think cotton voile or cotton batiste would be best. I don’t know how thick your double gauze fabrics are, but potentially, they could be too thick. Some of my designs have sleeves, and some don’t, and this one doesn’t. You could try putting a gathered sleeves from another pattern on this one. Or you could look at the other patterns that have sleeves. For example, the Melrose (https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/melrose-top-dress-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/) and the Chai (https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/chai-shirt-dress-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/) would be office appropriate. Also, you could wear a cardigan as well (https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/lisbon-cardigan-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/ or https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/aveiro-cardigan-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/). Layering is a good look and add sophistication to an outfit.
I love this top but I think I would add some tulip sleeves. I think that is the easiest way to add sleeves to a sleeveless top. Looking at it though, if you lengthened the flutter sleeve by 2 to 3 inches, that may work as well.
I was thinking along the same lines; lengthen the flutter sleeves and bring it a little further down the armsythe. Also I’m a big fan of lace for the bib with bias trim on the button placket.
