Material

Primary Fabric Use bottom weight, woven fabric with a firm stretch and great recovery. 10% to 15% stretch is ideal. Fabric with less stretch creates more fitted shorts and vice versa. Stretch twill and stretch denim are great choices.

Interfacing Use medium weight fusible woven or weft insertion interfacing.

Other Materials

  • All options: 1/4” (6 mm) wide twill tape as long as your waist, plus 3" (7.6 cm). You can also cut your own from non-stretch, lightweight fabric selvedge.
  • Fly front with zipper option:
    • 5” (13 cm) or longer closed-end, metal or nylon zipper. Longer zipper will be easier to install.
    • One 5/8” (1.6 cm) button. This can be a jean button or regular sewn-on button.
    • Two 5/8” (1.6 cm) regular, flat, sewn-on buttons. These are concealed and not visible from outside of the garment.
  • Buttoned fly front option:
    • Four 5/8” (1.6 cm) buttons. These can be jean buttons or regular sewn-on buttons.
    • Two 5/8” (1.6 cm) regular , flat, sewn-on buttons. These are concealed and not visible from outside of the garment.

Fabric Requirements

Most natural fibers shrink in the wash; be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk.

These are my perfect short. I’ve been looking for a slim fit Bermuda length short and decided to try these. They came together phenomenally and the instructions were so clear. The first pair fit so well I immediately made a second pair. I do wish the zip fly were a bit more of a true fly as when my hands are in the pockets, the zip is visible. However, I will be making this pattern several more times and these will quickly be the only shorts I wear.

  2. Charron

Almost finished. And I know I will love them, wearing a four, need to get back down to my 2, but I will get there the 4 are perfect now and I will take them in later.

  3. Anne

I love these shorts. The fit is excellent. I only made a small modification to eliminate some gaping in the waist.

If the crotch curve in these shorts is the same in her jeans pattern, that’ll be my next purchase.

Thank you for these well fitting patterns.

  4. Michelle

I bought this pattern last summer but only recently decided to make myself a pair of cargo shorts for work. I had some issues with pattern assembly so sent an email asking for some help, with the caveat that I don’t use Facebook and would appreciate not being referred to a crowdsource support group there. That was on August 28. It’s now September 19 and I haven’t received a response. I bought two other patterns which I’m now reluctant to print.

Waste of money – both for the pattern purchase and for the paper & toner I used to do the printing.

Hi Michelle, I don’t think I received your email. Could you send your question again?

I haven’t made the shorts yet as i just moved and alot of my sewing supplies are still boxed up. However, I had a great shopping experience and received access to my files right away. I might take the pattern to a copy shop and i really like that the sizes are layered so i need print only what i need. Itch to Stitch has a great selection of patterns and their instructions seem well done. I am glad I found this company on Instagram!

  13. Sarah

I am outside the size range, so I extended by two sizes. The only thing I didn’t like was the fly – it went together BEAUTIFULLY but I’d love it to have a slightly bigger cover flap, as I find it gapes and the zipper shows. Otherwise – love the pattern. Will make a button fly next time and size down on the waist, which gapes on me a fair bit.

How to choose your size

  1. Compare your waist circumference (narrowest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that best fits your waist. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  2. Compare your hip circumference (widest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that fits your hip best. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  3. It’s OK to use different sizes for the bust, waist and hip. The instructions for blending sizes are included in the pattern.
  4. If you are taller or shorter than 5’6” (168 cm), you should consider lengthening or shortening the garment. The instructions for lengthening or shortening are included in the pattern.
