I highly recommend that you check your fit by making a test garment with inexpensive fabric that has similar weight and stretch as your final garment fabric.
Primary Fabric Use light to medium-light weight, 2-way or 4-way knit fabric with 50% to 75% stretch and good recovery. Jersey and ITY knit are good choices. Woven fabrics are not recommended.
Most natural fibers shrink in the wash; be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk.

What I was looking for.

I’ve been looking for a “perfect” tank pattern for a while. I’ve sewn commercial patterns, and drafted my own by cloning tanks I love, but something’s always missing.
I’ve seen a lot of reviews of the Lago saying how great it is, so I decided to give it a try. As a free pattern it was also an opportunity to give Itch To Stitch a try since I have several other patterns of theirs on my wish list… the Mountain View Pull-On Jeans being top of the list right now.
First, I made the correct size for the Lago Tank based on my measurements, to see how ITS wanted it to look.
Apparently, huuuuge and ill-fitting? It was so gigantic that the sides of the tank top were draping like swag curtains, in floppy “U” shapes, with armholes that could almost have fit a kimono sleeve, and gave a complete view of my bra. Yikes! I did like the shape of the neckline, however, so I ran each side up, pinching out over an inch (so, removed four+ inches in total)… it’s still a bit large on the sides but that was as brave as I could be on the first go, and I decided that while I love the shape, the neckline falls lower than my comfort level, so I’d try the tank again in whatever size seemed about four inches smaller in circumference and see if that solved the issues.
By that measurement I should have gone down three sizes—but never having seen a pattern that far off I decided to go down only two sizes, adding 3/4″ to the length so a smaller top wouldn’t mean a shorter top. This worked perfectly (if by perfectly you mean having to guess, and make two tops, before getting one that fits like the pattern photo led me to expect).
While the semi-racerback dips in too far in the back to cover my bra straps, it is fitting how I believe it was designed to fit now, so not noticing the back-shoulder width of this pattern would be a little revealing is on me. The neckline, already wonderful, is now at a depth I find modest-yet-stylish; the armhole depth keeps me covered; and the width and shape of the side seams is just great.
Things about the pattern generally that I wasn’t sure about:
3/8″ seams terrified me. I’m a 5/8″ chick myself. Where’s the room to change things? However, since my changes were all of the make-it-smaller variety, this didn’t end up being an issue, and tbh, it saves all the steps in a Big 4 pattern that say “trim seams.” Also helped the neck and armhole bands to go together like a dream. So, I dunno about that, I guess I’m still on the fence. I like my wiggle room.
The shaped front pattern piece: A tank’s front and back side seams are (usually? in my expereience) both about the same shape, but in this pattern there’s extra shapely-ness at the bust on the front pattern piece. I have no need for an extra shapely bust so I wondered if this was going to make a saggy mess for me, but in the right/wrong size I sewed first, and in the wrong/right size I sewed second, it turned out that ITS was right and I was wrong. The slightly-more-curvy front pattern piece is just right 🙂 to make the tank fit well.
Conclusion: I’ve already added paper where needed and re-drafted that back-shoulder area with more coverage, trying to keep the graceful armhole shape as much as possible, and I will definitely be making this up again, albeit two sizes smaller than my measurements dictate. With patience and modifications, I think I may at last have my go-to tank top pattern!

Hi K, thank you so much for your thorough review! The pattern is designed for light to medium-light weight, 2-way or 4-way knit fabric with 50% to 75% stretch and good recovery. If your fabric has more stretch and less recovery, I would expect the result you experienced. I encourage you to try using the recommended fabric and your result would be different. Jersey with Lycra/spandex would be a good choice.
