Material

Primary fabric Any medium or bottom weight woven fabric with or without stretch would work with this pattern. Cotton, broadcloth, poplin, twill, denim, linen, linen blend, wool, wool blend, suiting and crepe are all good choices. User lighter-weight fabric for the waist tie option. Fabric with different level of drape will create different looks. Stable fabric is preferable. Unstable knit fabrics, like jersey, are not recommended. However, you could use very stable knit such as medium weight double knit. You should go down a size when you use a stable knit fabric or fabric with stretch.

Lining The lining fabric should have similar quality as the primary fabric, i.e. if the primary fabric has stretch, a lining with stretch should be used. Acetate, Ambiance by Bemberg, batiste, lawn, pima cotton, china silk, silk crepe de chine or silk georgette are all good choices as non-stretch lining fabric. Even if you choose not to line the culottes, you will still need some lining fabric for the pocket options.

Interfacing Light to medium weight fusible interfacing is recommended unless the fabric is very delicate, in which case sew-in interfacing, such as silk organza, should be used. Choose very light-weight interfacing for the waist tie option.

Other Materials

  • 7" (18 cm) invisible zipper
  • One set of size 1 hook and eye
  • 1/8" (0.3 cm)-wide twill tape or fabric selvage as long as your waist (or your desired waist length) for stabilization
  • Four 1" (2.5 cm) buttons for waist tab option
  • Two 3/4" (1.9 cm) buttons for patch pocket option

Tools

  • Invisible zipper foot
  • Regular zipper foot
  • Buttonhole foot
  • Serger machine (optional to finish your seam allowances)

Fabric Requirements

Most natural fibers shrink in the wash, be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk. If you are lengthening your Emily Culottes, your additional primary fabric requirement will be twice as much as your added length. For example, if you add 5" (13 cm) to your length, you will need an additional 10" (26 cm) of fabric. However, if you are using 44" (115 cm) wide fabric and are size 8 or above, you will need four times as much as your added length. For example, if you add 5" (13 cm) to your length, you will need an additional 20" (52 cm) of fabric.

I love the style and the variety of options. The pockets add interest while not adding bulk to the hips. The welt pocket is a lot of steps but the step by step directions resulted in perfect pockets the first try and actually did not take that long to sew! A classic style that can be made for casual or work wear.

  4. April

An important style to add to my stash.

My very first Itch to Stitch and I am hooked! The fit is excellent and these are *so* comfortable and flattering. I made my “trial” (muslin) out of some old stretchy mystery fabric that I couldn’t figure out anything to do with. This pattern is so good that this ‘throw away’ fabric just became a versatile new skirt (well “skort”, really) that I’m sure I will wear all the time! Love how a drapey fabric ends up almost indistinguishable from a skirt. And no chub rub! The bomb.

A great and versatile pattern designed with love for details. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. The fit was spot on and my culottes are very comfortable to wear. I love the contoured waistband.

  9. Marisa

I LOVE this pattern! The directions and diagrams are clear to understand. I also love the tips along the way. The resulting culottes are extremely flattering and very comfortable… mine wear very much like a dramatic a-line skirt (love that!). I definitely plan on making a few more! I am pretty picky when it comes to buying online patterns from indie designers, and Itch-to-Stitch has created another fantastic design that is very well drafted and spot on with ready-to-wear and the runway.

I just LOVE this pattern! The instructions are very clear, the sizing is good, and with the sewing techniques are professional. My culottes turned out very well. I’m hard to please when it comes to digital patterns. The Emily culottes are a great pattern that I will be making more times.

How to choose your size

  1. Compare your waist circumference (narrowest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that best fits your waist. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  2. Compare your hip circumference (widest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that fits your hip best. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  3. It’s OK to use different sizes for the bust, waist and hip. The instructions for blending sizes are included in the pattern.
  4. If you are taller or shorter than 5’6” (168 cm), you should consider lengthening or shortening the garment. The instructions for lengthening or shortening are included in the pattern.
