New Pattern: Sequoia Cargos & Shorts
I like hiking a lot. In fact, I hike with a group of ladies almost every Saturday or Sunday. Our biggest accomplishment was a 72-mile hike around “our” lake over 3.5 days.
I want to create some pants that I could wear to hike. Hence, here is the new pattern, Sequoia Cargos & Shorts!

The most interesting feature of the Sequoia is the waistband. There is a fly front zipper, but there’s also an elastic wrapped in ribbing. Ages ago, Diane, my “original” tester who tested my very first pattern, took a photo of a pair of store-bought pants that she loved, and I agree it would be great to have a waistband like that! It’s comfortable and more sophisticated looking than a regular pair of elastic-waist pants.

we live and work on a farm in Northern BC and desperately need some wool pants. Can’t find wool work pants anywhere. Would your pattern work in good-quality medium to heavy weight wool?
I would love to make something like this for my hubby. Any plans for add-on patterns to turn it into a men’s cargo pattern?
Hi, I am afraid that these cargos are specified designed for women (smaller waist compared to the hip, etc.). While it’s possible to use it for men, but probably not without a lot of adjustment. It might be a simpler endeavor to find a pattern for cargos for men.

I had three pairs of light woven pants that were just like these, except the ribbed waist band was the full width and length of the waist and it had a faux fly. I LOVED those pants because they were lift, dried quickly, looked dressy enough but we’re so comfortable and functional. When the first pair dies I took them apart and learned to make my own but I left off some features due to my skill level. I could really use these as a substitute teacher!! I can’t wait–I need pants with pockets so bad!!

This looks like a great pattern to use as scrub pants, also. I’m a nurse and buy cargo pants for work that are very similar. Looks like a great pattern!

Oh my gosh! This pattern is perfect! I’m a girl scout troop leader and sometimes finding well-fitting, affordable hiking pants are just not possible. Now I can make my own, the way I want them! Thank you for this pattern!!!

They look great. I’ve been looking for a hiking trouser pattern forever. I really struggle with ready to wear outdoor trousers they just never fit and a comfortable pair is impossible to find. Can’t wait to have a go at these. Thanks Kennis xx

Love this pattern – I’m going to bicycle touring this summer and would love to make two pairs of these for that trip. Do you have suggestions for a suitable fabric that will dry quickly? Assuming nylon is too lightweight.
Hi Susan, actually nylon is perfect. It’s made for hiking and outdoor activities. My coral ones are nylon. (Nylon woven that is; not a nylon knit.)
Did you use 100% nylon fabric or some with stretch? Do you have a source? The nylon fabric at Joann’s is like tent material. Also, what interfacing do you use with nylon ? I would think sew in instead of iron on.

Mine is actually medium-weight twill. I used regular fusible weft insertion interfacing from Fashion Sewing Supplies.

cute pattern – that ribbing is hard to source (economically and anything close to color matching) – is there an alternate way to do the waistband treatment.
Thanks for your interest Mary Ann. A tester used a firm stretch knit fabric and had success. So it’s possible to use that. 🙂
