My favorite feature of the Newport Top is the boat neck (it’s probably not surprising; that is also the favorite of many of my testers). I am a sucker for elegant-looking garments, and that’s what the boat neck is all about.
I also like the relaxed fit because it’s really comfortable. Especially on those days when I don’t feel like anything hugging my belly, it’s really perfect.
When you choose a fabric that is more structured, you have more of a boxy look. When you choose a fabric with more drape, you have a fitted look (as the fabric tends to get close to your body). I love both looks; the choice is all yours!
The Newport Top features:
- Boxy silhouette with a relaxed fit
- Wide boat neckline
- “Envelope fold” shoulders
- High-low hem
- Two sleeve options: 3/4 flute and regular long
Let’s look at the beautiful Newport Tops from my talented testers, shall we?

I want to know if this can be made from woven fabric as well as knit. I could find no indication in the pattern description. Thanks.
This pattern is designed for knit fabric. Here’s what it says in the listing (on the materials tab toward the bottom): “Primary Fabric Use light to medium-weight knit fabric with 20% to 50% stretch as well as great drape and recovery. Sweater knit and jersey are great choices.” Woven fabric is not recommmended.
Can the hip area on this top be narrowed and still look right?
Hi Karen, you can narrow the hip area to fit your figure. It is supposed to have a boxy look; narrowing it will change the look a bit, but not in any bad way. Just different.
So cute! Would there be any problem changing to short sleeves? I pretty much live in short sleeve tops.
Hi Angela, you could crop the sleeves short anywhere you’d like.
Love this! Would any of you tester ladies consider yourselves upside-down triangles (aka broad shoulders and a large bust)? I’m always a little paranoid trying boat-neck tops even though I love the look of them because I don’t want to overexaggerate my natural shape!
It didn’t strike me that any tester was a upside-down triangle shape. But I think wide shoulders are so beautiful. I think it would look great on you.
Love this. ..it looks great on all the models. I love it and can’t wait to get the pattern….and a few others too.
