New Pattern: Melrose Top & Dress
A woven dress that is beginner(+) friendly and has cup size options? YES! Please welcome the Melrose Top & Dress pattern.
I think the Melrose is a blank canvas that you’ve been waiting for. The understated design allows you to showcase your pretty fabric. I also think that it’s a great base to exercise your creativity if pattern hacking is your thing. So many possibilities!
Not to mention that the pattern comes in top and dress options, so you get the biggest bang for your bucks. You will want a full closet of Melrose dresses and tops!
The dress option also comes in pockets! Whenever possible, I put pockets in the design. I love pockets as much as most of you do.
Here are some of the highlights of the Melrose:
- All views include:
- Options for A, B, C, D and DD cups
- C, D and DD cups have bust darts
- Wide, scoop neckline finished with bias binding
- Dolman short sleeves with cuffs
- Unlined
- Layers feature—print only the sizes you need
- View A includes:
- Dress with cinched waist with elastic through casing
- Ample, functional in-seam pockets
- View B includes:
- Top with cinched waist with elastic through casing
- Gathered peplum
- View C includes:
- Short, boxy top with bottom band
Both View A and View B have elastic waist through casing, and the top portion is designed to be a little long, so you have the “blouson” effect.
You can also lengthen the peplum portion on View B. Instructions are included.

You can lengthen or shorten the dress as you please. I think the Melrose would look great as a mini dress too.
The Melrose comes in multiple cup sizes, and the C, D and DD cups have bust dart.

I love the multi-coloured stripe version. I wonder which tester this is? Ther is a small logo saying “Gabz Design”. Would live to look at this person’s other makes.
This pattern is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I have a small piece of fabric with gigantic print bunches of grapes. I’m worried that making the bands for the hem and cuff will break up the print. Could the lines of the main pieces just be extended and then the edges bound or hemmed?

Thank you, Kennis! I’ve been wishing someone would design a dress pattern like this; it’s one of my favorite styles. 🙂 Do you think it is suited for “quilting” cottons?
I think quilting cotton could work if it’s not very stiff. Personally, I don’t use quilting cotton for making clothing, but other people have made it with success. 🙂
