Meet the Zubiri Trousers
Some sewing projects immediately earn a permanent place in your wardrobe, and the Zubiri Trousers are exactly that for me.
I honestly can’t stop wearing mine.
When I first chose the fabric for my sample, I was a little unsure. I used a 100% stone-washed linen that is 205 gsm (6 oz), and when I held it up in front of a sunny window, it had just a hint of transparency. I wondered if it might be too light for trousers. But I decided to trust the process and go ahead anyway.
I’m so glad I did.

The finished trousers turned out to be absolutely perfect for summer: light, breathable, comfortable, and effortlessly elegant. Since finishing them, I’ve reached for them again and again, and I truly think the Zubiri will become my tried-and-true trousers pattern for years to come.
What makes the Zubiri especially unique is its construction. There is no side seam. Instead, the shaping comes entirely from the darts. Eight darts in total around the body. The result is sleek, clean, and beautifully sculpted while still feeling relaxed and comfortable to wear. To me, it’s simplicity at its finest.

And while linen is a wonderful choice, you certainly aren’t limited to it. The Zubiri works beautifully in medium-weight woven fabrics with some drape. Fabrics with fluidity not only add comfort, but also enhance the elegant movement and silhouette of the trousers.
One especially interesting aspect of the Zubiri is the way sizing is customized. In most sewing patterns, if your waist and hip measurements fall into different sizes, you would blend between sizes by gradually drawing from one size line to another. The Zubiri works differently. Since the shaping comes from the darts rather than side seams, you choose your size based on your hips, then adjust the waist fit by changing the width of the darts. It’s a clean and surprisingly intuitive approach that allows you to fine-tune the fit while preserving the elegant lines of the design.
And if you’re feeling nervous about sewing the fly-front zipper, don’t be! If you follow the instructions closely, you’ll end up with a beautifully professional finish. It’s one of those techniques that feels incredibly satisfying once completed.

Beautiful Tester Versions
One of my favorite parts of releasing a new pattern is seeing what the testers create, and the Zubiri testers truly outdid themselves. They were so excited about these trousers, and I couldn’t be happier seeing their beautiful results. Each version has its own personality depending on the fabric choice, and I hope their photos inspire you as much as they inspired me. (Click photo to enlarge.)
