Finished Garment Measurements

Choosing Your Size

  1. Compare your waist circumference (narrowest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that best fits your waist. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size. Be sure to measure the narrowest part of your waist; these pants sit high at the narrowest part of your waist.
  2. Compare your hip circumference (widest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that fits your hip best. If you are in between sizes, choose the smaller size.
  3. It’s OK to use different sizes for the waist and hip (see instructions for details).
  4. If you are taller or shorter than 5’6” (168 cm), you should consider lengthening or shortening the culottes (see instructions for details).

I highly recommend that you check your fit by making a test garment with inexpensive fabric that has similar weight and drape as your final garment fabric.

Primary Fabric Use medium weight, non-stretch woven fabric, such as twill, broadcloth, tropical wool, lightweight denim and linen.

Lining Use stable, lightweight woven fabric such as quilting cotton and cotton batiste. The lining is for the pocket bags.

Interfacing Use medium weight fusible woven or weft insertion interfacing.

Other Materials

  • Seven (7) 1/2“ (1.25 cm) buttons— These can be jean buttons or regular sewn-on buttons.
  • 1/4“ (6 mm) wide twill tape as long as your waist, plus 3“ (7.6 cm). You can also cut your own from non-stretch, lightweight fabric selvedge
  • 15" (38 cm) of 3/8“ (1 cm) wide straight fusible stay tape (or make your own using lightweight woven fusible interfacing cut on straight grain)
  • 1" (2.5 cm) wide purchased bias binding as long as the circumference of your hip (or make your own)

Fabric Requirements

Most natural fibers shrink in the wash; be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk.

Instructions did not follow through clearly for pocket instructions as well as fly front. Perhaps it is just me but I am on my second muslin. The first was unsolvable. Even though I have had these problems I like the culottes. I really needed a sew along just to visualize the process.

Hi Sharon, I am sorry that the culottes didn’t fit you well. I am sure with perseverance, you will succeed. And if you are off the chart, I’d like to let you know that I am testing the Mountain View Pull-on Jeans in expanded size now. Perhaps that will fit you better; it’s also an easier sew (with no buttons and no zipper). I don’t have any video tutorials usually.

Love the style of these culottes. They are quite different to other patterns on the market. I used to have a pair of rtw very similar many years ago togather with a matching sleeveless top.

Thanks, Kennis, for designing this versatile casual culotte. I made a couple of adjustments for my petite size, lengthened them a little for the fall season and my age appropriateness, and they fit perfectly! Your instructions were clear, well illustrated and complete. The only misstep I had was with the peak in the back waist area, but an evaluation of what the finished product should look like solved the problem.
I have made the Busan and Paulina Tops. Both are well designed and fun to make.
Your designs are stylish and useful for many ages. I look forward to what you design next. Now, off to make the Atenas Jacket to go with the Gobi Culotte!

Really nice culottes with a lot of pretty details and option to make these as long as you want to! 🙂

Detailed pattern with clear instructions. If you’ll follow those, the end result will look like the photo’s. It’s the best of both worlds in my opinion, looks like a (well fitting) skirt, but you can cycle in them, without risking awkward moments.

    I love this pattern!
