The Atenas Jacket is a classic denim jacket. The denim jacket we know and love was released by Levi Strauss in 1953, and since then, the denim jacket remains relatively unchanged. You can’t get more timeless than that. It means once you make the Atenas, you will wear the jacket for years, and it will not go out of style. The Atenas has the classic details of a denim jacket. While you are welcome to implement each and every one of the detailsβ€”chest pockets with flaps, single-welt pockets, flat-felled seams and topstitching, you are also welcome to simplify and omit those details. Regardless of your preference, the pattern instructions will walk you through every step of the way!

Atenas Jacket Features:

  • Options for A, B, C, D and DD cups
  • Front double princess seams
  • Chest pockets with flaps or faux chest pocket
  • Front and back yokes
  • Optional single-welt pockets
  • Optional buttoned side tab at bottom band
  • Slightly dropped shoulders
  • Two-piece sleeve
  • Functional sleeve vent with buttoned cuff
  • Layers feature (print only the sizes you need)

Skill Level: Advanced (Intermediate if omitting welt pockets)

Material

Primary Fabric Use stable, medium-weight, woven fabric with a crisp drape. Denim, twill, broadcloth are great choices. Keep in mind that if you choose to use flat-felled seams, the fabric can get quite thick, so choose your fabric accordingly if your sewing machine cannot handle thick layers.

Lining Use a stable, non stretch woven fabric for the lining. Quilting cotton is a great choice. The lining is for the pockets.

Interfacing Use medium weight fusible woven or weft insertion interfacing.

Other Materials

  • Fourteen (14) (ten (10) if omitting side tabs) 0.67“ (17 mm) jean buttons and tool to install them (usually just a hammer)
  • Two (2) pieces of 2“ by 2“ (5 cm x 5 cm) medium weight fusible woven or weft insertion interfacing. No pattern pieces are included; however, the interfacing requirement below covers the amount needed.
  • Topstitching thread

Fabric Requirements

Most natural fibers shrink in the wash; be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk.

  1. Sylvie

Usually I don’t comment but I am pleased enough to do it this time. I just started to work on the pattern, and as of now I am impressed with the design details included, all what I wanted in a jean jacket. Also the measurement chart and the instructions on how to blend the sizes are clear. I look forward to continue this project this winter! Thank you Itch to Stitch and hello from Montreal.

  2. Becky

I made this pattern in a white stretch denim and it turned out perfect. I made a 12D but ended up taking about 2” out of the upper side seams and 1/2” out of the sleeve’s circumference. This was my first classic denim jacket to make and it feels amazing.

  3. Donna

I really enjoyed making this jacket. The instructions were very thorough.

  4. Carla

    Excellent pattern sizing and instruction.

  5. Anonymous

Very nice pattern. Excellent instructions. I buy ITS patterns because they fit and I can easily follow the instructions. There is nothing worse then spending time and money and getting stuck somewhere along the way and not being able to finish.

  6. Anonymous

Just love the fit options especially the choice of cup size.

  7. Michele

    Excellent instructions.

  8. Jennifer

I love the design, the instructions were really helpful. I’ve sewed one up, but struggled a lot with the fit at the shoulders and asked advice from an online group about how to alter it and I’m still not sure, so this pattern is going in my “maybe try again one day when I know more about fit alterations” pile for now.

  9. Anonymous

    Clear instructions lovely pattern

  10. Linda

A very challenging sew, but I really enjoyed the process. The instructions were spot on and it was a perfect fit. Fabulous pattern.

  11. Ruth

    Beautiful pattern, clear instructions.

  12. Jodie

    Very well written and clear.

  13. Mary Ann

I love the pattern. Easy to follow instructions.

  14. Donna

I absolutely love this pattern, the measurements are really accurate and the instructions are very clear with the addition of online tutorials. I also love how it has cup sizes and shows you how to blend sizes ie for a bigger waist and hip ratio to bust. It would be helpful to add a reminder to the instructions about increasing the bottom band size if you’ve graded up to a bigger hip size. I would definitely recommend this pattern and am thinking of what fabric I can make my next one in!

  15. Mary

This jacket is exactly what I have always wanted, and now
I can have it in a size that fits me. Love it.πŸ’•

  16. Patricia

Still working on it. So far so good. I love your patterns

  17. Cynthia

I chose a size 16D based on my body measurements — the fit was spot on, the instructions were great, and the finished product is incredible! My only advice/complaint to those on the bigger end of the size range is that I figured out the welt pocket pattern was too small (it didn’t cover the interfacing) after I had finished it.

  18. Denise

The authentic details of this pattern sold me. The instructions suggest alternate, simplified techniques such as faux pockets and serged seam finishes to replace the flat-felled seams, but the traditional techniques are primary. I appreciate the clear instructions and precise drafting, especially the separate pattern pieces for cup sizes.

If, like me, you’re hesitant about a jean jacket, having never found one that fits your shoulders, bust and hips all at the same time, give this one a try. The D-cup option fits my FF girls just fine. Pay attention to the hip measurement and grade as necessary–there’s not a lot of ease there.

  19. Tanja

I never made such a complicated item, but it came together fine. The only thing that i had problems with, was setting in the sleeves. I wear a D cup and the fit is great. Will make another one soon.

  20. Michelle

Pattern was written really well, I only had to make minor fit adjustments! Love the multiple bust sizes.

  21. Charlene Fiumara

Great pattern. Very easy to sew.

  22. Ophelia

I have been wanting to make a jeans style jacket for years and finally made this jacket. Once again the instructions were very clear and I was really pleased with the result. I used a cotton sateen with a little stretch. I will now be looking to make another one. Thank you for another stunning pattern.

  23. Anonymous

The tutorial and sewing is very easy to follow to sew. Thank you very much!

  24. Absolutely loved sewing this pattern. It is not for a beginner. If you are interested in a few challenges like sewing welt pockets, flatfeld seams, installing jean buttons and buttonholes then this is for you! I spend about 10-15 hours total and am very pleased with the jacket. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Just take your time and you’ll have a well constructed jacket.

  25. Debbie

    Always the best!

  26. Great pattern love cup sizes

  27. Mary

Superb pattern. Great fit and excellent instructions. Not a quick sew but worth every minute. Highly recommended.

  28. Tecla

    Beautiful styling–the perfect “Levi” jacket.

  29. Dawn

Download quick and effect less, clear printing instructions and great to be able to select the size you want. Clear instructions to make.

  30. Shelley

I love Itch to Stitch patterns because 1) they are different from other indie patterns 2) cup sizes!!! and 3) they are usually outside my sewing comfort zone so I learn something new – always a good thing!

  31. Kate

As soon as this pattern was released I immediately bought it, had it printed and made up within the shortest time I’ve ever managed! It was exactly the pattern I had been looking for and the end result is nothing short of perfect! I highly recommend the Atenas, such a superb pattern, excellent drafting and helpful instructions.

  32. Terri

    Great style & fit.

  33. Linda

I love the cup sizes makes sewing so much easier

  34. Sheryl

    Love this pattern!

  35. Kadri

I love this jean jacket pattern! I seems so complicated but if you take your time and go step by step everything comes together beautifully! I couldn’t reccommend it enough! πŸ™‚

  36. Marieke

ITS is a great classical timeless style

  37. Rosa

The instructions are very clear and precise, I have made my first jeans jacket! It fits me very well and so happy with it that I’m finishing my second, that I have slightly modified.
    Thank you!

  38. Brigetta

Awesome jacket pattern. Such clear instructions that I know it will be a breeze to make

How to choose your size

  1. Determine your cup sizeβ€”subtract the circumference of your over bust from the circumference of the fullest part of your bust. If the rounded difference is 1β€³ (2.5 cm), use A cup; 2β€³ (5 cm), use B cup; 3β€³ (7.5 cm), use C cup; 4β€³ (10 cm), use D cup; 5β€³ (12.5 cm), use DD cup.
  2. After determining the cup size, compare your bust circumference (fullest part) to the β€œBody Measurements” table. Using the corresponding row for your cup, choose the size that best fits your bust. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  3. Compare your waist circumference (narrowest part) to the β€œBody Measurements” table. Choose the size that best fits your waist. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  4. Compare your hip circumference (widest part) to the β€œBody Measurements” table. Choose the size that fits your hip best. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  5. It’s OK to use different sizes for the bust, waist and hip. The instructions for blending sizes are included in the pattern.
  6. If you are taller or shorter than 5’6” (168 cm), you should consider lengthening or shortening the garment. The instructions for lengthening or shortening are included in the pattern.
