The Atenas Jacket is a classic denim jacket. The denim jacket we know and love was released by Levi Strauss in 1953, and since then, the denim jacket remains relatively unchanged. You can’t get more timeless than that. It means once you make the Atenas, you will wear the jacket for years, and it will not go out of style. The Atenas has the classic details of a denim jacket. While you are welcome to implement each and every one of the detailsβchest pockets with flaps, single-welt pockets, flat-felled seams and topstitching, you are also welcome to simplify and omit those details. Regardless of your preference, the pattern instructions will walk you through every step of the way!
Atenas Jacket Features:
Skill Level: Advanced (Intermediate if omitting welt pockets)
Sizes:Β 00 – 20 (See “Size Chart” tab below for detailed measurements)
Don’t want to print and tape paper together? The Atenas Jacket pattern now includes an additional large format file (size A0 paper) that you can send to your print shop to print!

Primary Fabric Use stable, medium-weight, woven fabric with a crisp drape. Denim, twill, broadcloth are great choices. Keep in mind that if you choose to use flat-felled seams, the fabric can get quite thick, so choose your fabric accordingly if your sewing machine cannot handle thick layers.
Lining Use a stable, non stretch woven fabric for the lining. Quilting cotton is a great choice. The lining is for the pockets.
Interfacing Use medium weight fusible woven or weft insertion interfacing.
Most natural fibers shrink in the wash; be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk.

How to choose your size
Marita –
I appreciate the detailed instructions and the cup size options. I also like that the dimensions (bust, waist and hip combinations) are realistic (unlike the big 4 pattern companies!). In spite of the instructions about which seam finish to use and testing out flat felled seams with my fabric, I still got an unpleasant surprise when stitching the yokes to the front panels as I did not realize that, if using a denim that is the same weight as classic jeans, and if you put the chest pockets in, there will be spots where you will be stitching through 8 layers of fabric – extremely difficult even with a strong machine and a size 100 jeans needle. I managed it, but the yoke seam is pretty badly distorted by an unsightly bulge where the 8 layers are. I will be making another jacket with the same material and this time, will use faux flat felled instead of the conventional flat felled seams. In an effort to help others profit from my experience: if your material is regular denim weight (like the weight of Levi 501 jeans. I believe this is between 10 and 12 oz denim), conventional flat felled seams will not work. Faux flat felled is more manageable. Other than that, the instructions are really clear and the jacket is well constructed. Love all the pockets, even though I think none of them will fit a smartphone. Oh well, that’s what purses are for, I guess. LOL. Oh and I emailed Kennis with a question and got an answer less than 24 hours later! Excellent customer service!

Great pattern. Lots of pieces. Only problem I had was pressing sleeve allowance toward jacket bodice anybody have any suggestions
Magdalena –
I love this pattern. It is an easy to follow an versatile pattern
Renee –
Nice classic jacket that fits me well
Inna –
Such a great pattern! The instructions are great and the result is amazing.

Iβm excited to expand my sewing comfort zone with the Atenas Jacket pattern. Often admire a spiffy jacket with functional welt hand pockets, but was always intimidated by the process. Reading over the very clear instructions with the step-by-step diagrams, I feel confident in giving this a Go ! Thinking a tapestry type print instead of blue denim, something to go with a long skirt or corduroy pants this fall / winter. Another huge Plus, love that Itch-To-Stitch patterns come in different cup sizes. Iβm on the small side, 32 A, and when I sew with ITS my βcustom madeβ garment always fits beautifully the first time I sew it. On the other hand, I just sewed my sister, 36 DD, a ITS Bonn Shirt that she loves. BTW, my husband of 44 years loves the fit of my two pairs of North Point Trousers. Perhaps I can make the pants and jacket up as a combo.
Darlene –
Well fitting and the details are amazing
carmen –
Wonderful pattern!

Usually I don’t comment but I am pleased enough to do it this time. I just started to work on the pattern, and as of now I am impressed with the design details included, all what I wanted in a jean jacket. Also the measurement chart and the instructions on how to blend the sizes are clear. I look forward to continue this project this winter! Thank you Itch to Stitch and hello from Montreal.
Becky –
I made this pattern in a white stretch denim and it turned out perfect. I made a 12D but ended up taking about 2β out of the upper side seams and 1/2β out of the sleeveβs circumference. This was my first classic denim jacket to make and it feels amazing.
Donna –
I really enjoyed making this jacket. The instructions were very thorough.
Carla –
Excellent pattern sizing and instruction.

Very nice pattern. Excellent instructions. I buy ITS patterns because they fit and I can easily follow the instructions. There is nothing worse then spending time and money and getting stuck somewhere along the way and not being able to finish.
Anonymous –
Just love the fit options especially the choice of cup size.
Michele –
Excellent instructions.
Jennifer –
I love the design, the instructions were really helpful. I’ve sewed one up, but struggled a lot with the fit at the shoulders and asked advice from an online group about how to alter it and I’m still not sure, so this pattern is going in my “maybe try again one day when I know more about fit alterations” pile for now.

Clear instructions lovely pattern
Linda –
A very challenging sew, but I really enjoyed the process. The instructions were spot on and it was a perfect fit. Fabulous pattern.
Ruth –
Beautiful pattern, clear instructions.
Jodie –
Very well written and clear.
Mary Ann –
I love the pattern. Easy to follow instructions.
Donna –
I absolutely love this pattern, the measurements are really accurate and the instructions are very clear with the addition of online tutorials. I also love how it has cup sizes and shows you how to blend sizes ie for a bigger waist and hip ratio to bust. It would be helpful to add a reminder to the instructions about increasing the bottom band size if youβve graded up to a bigger hip size. I would definitely recommend this pattern and am thinking of what fabric I can make my next one in!
Mary –
This jacket is exactly what I have always wanted, and now
I can have it in a size that fits me. Love it.π
Patricia –
Still working on it. So far so good. I love your patterns
Cynthia –
I chose a size 16D based on my body measurements — the fit was spot on, the instructions were great, and the finished product is incredible! My only advice/complaint to those on the bigger end of the size range is that I figured out the welt pocket pattern was too small (it didn’t cover the interfacing) after I had finished it.
Denise –
The authentic details of this pattern sold me. The instructions suggest alternate, simplified techniques such as faux pockets and serged seam finishes to replace the flat-felled seams, but the traditional techniques are primary. I appreciate the clear instructions and precise drafting, especially the separate pattern pieces for cup sizes.
If, like me, you’re hesitant about a jean jacket, having never found one that fits your shoulders, bust and hips all at the same time, give this one a try. The D-cup option fits my FF girls just fine. Pay attention to the hip measurement and grade as necessary–there’s not a lot of ease there.
Tanja –
I never made such a complicated item, but it came together fine. The only thing that i had problems with, was setting in the sleeves. I wear a D cup and the fit is great. Will make another one soon.
Michelle –
Pattern was written really well, I only had to make minor fit adjustments! Love the multiple bust sizes.
Charlene Fiumara –
Great pattern. Very easy to sew.
Ophelia –
I have been wanting to make a jeans style jacket for years and finally made this jacket. Once again the instructions were very clear and I was really pleased with the result. I used a cotton sateen with a little stretch. I will now be looking to make another one. Thank you for another stunning pattern.

The tutorial and sewing is very easy to follow to sew. Thank you very much!

Absolutely loved sewing this pattern. It is not for a beginner. If you are interested in a few challenges like sewing welt pockets, flatfeld seams, installing jean buttons and buttonholes then this is for you! I spend about 10-15 hours total and am very pleased with the jacket. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Just take your time and you’ll have a well constructed jacket.

Always the best!

Superb pattern. Great fit and excellent instructions. Not a quick sew but worth every minute. Highly recommended.
Tecla –
Beautiful styling–the perfect “Levi” jacket.
Dawn –
Download quick and effect less, clear printing instructions and great to be able to select the size you want. Clear instructions to make.
Shelley –
I love Itch to Stitch patterns because 1) they are different from other indie patterns 2) cup sizes!!! and 3) they are usually outside my sewing comfort zone so I learn something new – always a good thing!
Kate –
As soon as this pattern was released I immediately bought it, had it printed and made up within the shortest time Iβve ever managed! It was exactly the pattern I had been looking for and the end result is nothing short of perfect! I highly recommend the Atenas, such a superb pattern, excellent drafting and helpful instructions.
Terri –
Great style & fit.
Linda –
I love the cup sizes makes sewing so much easier

Kadri –
I love this jean jacket pattern! I seems so complicated but if you take your time and go step by step everything comes together beautifully! I couldn’t reccommend it enough! π
Marieke –
ITS is a great classical timeless style
Rosa –
The instructions are very clear and precise, I have made my first jeans jacket! It fits me very well and so happy with it that I’m finishing my second, that I have slightly modified.
Thank you!
