New Pattern: Seychelles Top
There’s nothing not to love about Itch to Stitch’s latest pattern, the Seychelles Top, a basic woven top that is versatile, comfortable, and cute! I know that the Seychelles Top will be the workhorse of your wardrobe.
The Seychelles comes in sizes 00 to 40 and cup sizes. That means the pattern comes in a grand total of 140 sizes. If that’s not a bang for your buck, I don’t know what is!
For one week (through March 29, 2021), the Seychelles Top sewing pattern is 20% off. The volume discount still applies—get 15% off your entire cart if your purchase is $20 or more, or 20% off your entire cart if your purchase is $30 or more!
Almost as important for some of you is what the pattern does NOT have. The Seychelles does not have any zippers. The short sleeve version also does not have any buttons (the long sleeve version has a button and button loop at the wrist, but it does NOT have any buttonholes).
The Seychelles is long enough to be tucked in, but if you don’t want to tuck it in, you could hem it higher to your preference.
A variety of fabrics can be used to make the Seychelles. My initial design idea is to use linen (my yellow version is linen). The fabric highlights the pretty pleats on the short sleeves. But you can also use something soft such as rayon challis, like the multi-color one I have. They do have totally different feels to them.
My favorite feature of the Seychelles is the narrow shoulder. The shoulders are designed to be narrow and they are combined with roomy sleeves (the pleated short sleeve or the gathered long sleeve). It’s not just a stylistic choice on my part, but it is also very practical for both wide-shoulder and narrow-shoulder peeps. Basically, you will not have to make any narrow or wide shoulder adjustments as a result of this design.
Here are a summery of the Seychelles Top:
- Options for cup sizes
- Bust darts for a great bust fit
- V-neck finished with facing
- Narrow shoulders with extra sleeve cap ease result in a balanced look
- Two sleeve options:
- Short sleeve with pleats on the sleeve cap
- Long sleeve with gathers on the sleeve cap and around the wrist; narrow cuff with button and loop closure
- Designed for woven fabric
Let’s take a look at the beautiful Seychelles Tops my talented testers made! There are more than 70 of them! (I know, it’s crazy! Many testers wanted to make this and they made multiple!)

More extensive sizes on new and old patterns will be lovely! Thank you. In America we have 68% who wear a larger size. We are up against COVID, “stay-at-home” employment, high cost of food/gas, and unsafe conditions to get out and walk. But we can sew beautiful garments for good self-esteem and even to alter them when restrictions ease up a bit.
I have extra fabric in the sleeve when pinning to the armscye ~2″, 1″ front and 1″ back (ie: you can pinch 1/2″ on either side”. This is after matching the center notch to the shoulder seam and lining the two notches on the shoulders to the center of the basted box pleats on the sleeve. Following the underarm up toward the shoulder, the notches match back to front and there is no extra fabric until I get up to the basted box pleats where I have the 1″ extra on either side when matching the notches on the shoulder. I have watched YouTube of the testers for this pattern and know this is not usual. Double checked that body and sleeves are both same size 6, pleats follow pattern and are placed correctly, arm tube seam is 1/2″. So close to finishing, but now I’m stuck. If I wing it and make the box pleats larger, the 2 notches on the body will likely not align to the middle of the pleat. Kennis, do you have any ideas as to what this might be or suggestions for me? Thanks in advance!
Hi Erica, thank you for reaching out. I am not sure what the issue is without having a visual. Do you use Facebook? You can post your question along with some photos in the Itch to Stitch FB group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ItchToStitchDesigns).
Hello, Where can I find the fabric requirements for this pattern.?
Yes,it is in the “Materials” tab in the product listing.
Hi, congrats this is a lovely pattern. I have an overbust of 30″ and bust 32″ with narrow shoulders so I’d likely use the shoulders of 00 and bust of 0. As I already have narrow shoulders I was concerned this might make the sleeve caps more ‘puffed’/voluminous than on someone with average or wider shoulders. ‘Puffed’ sleeves are not a look I’d wear on my small frame or for personal style and age. Is this likely to happen? tia for your advice.
Hi Lyn, in the pattern, there are instructions for choosing a size. This pattern comes in cup sizes, so you’d choose B cup size 0. There’s no need to choose a different size for your shoulders. If you choose a softer fabric, the pleats or gathers won’t stand out. Choosing a structured fabric would accentuate the shoulders (or “puffed” as you called it).
Thank you, I was concerned if my narrow shoulders weren’t filling out the sleeves there would be excess fabric that may stand/’pouf’ out. I’ve successfully made skirts and pants but the excess fabric above the bust in most tops has so far discouraged me. I’ve purchased 5-6 of your patterns but haven’t yet sewn them and none are fitted tops so I’m not familiar with your fit yet. I need to prioritise working on this and very much appreciate your smaller sizes and cup sizes, thanks for the inclusivity and great patterns.
Hello!
I’m not sure if this is the best place for this question…
Do you have any intention to rework some of your previously released patterns into your more extensive size range?
Just today I saw the Bonn Shirt/Dress. It is absolutely a classic!
You understand how to work with woven fabric, and what you have offered in your more extensive size range fits me well. So I am interested in your answer!
Please excuse me if you have already mentioned this topic elsewhere, I have not seen your idea.
Thank you!
julie
Hi Julie, thank you for your interest. My focus is to develop new patterns with the expanded sizes, so I don’t have a plan to revisit the older patterns. But that doesn’t mean I won’t do it ever, it’s just not the priority now.
There’s not one that I don’t like
Fabulous, awesome the perfect top for anytime. Can’t wait to get my pattern & fabric. Just one question, can I use a firm knit if I want to?
Hi Deborah, I have a similar design for knit fabric, the Busan Top: https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/busan-top-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/ Neck bands, which Busan uses, is more suitable for knit fabric, whereas, in the Seychelles, I use a facing to finish the neckline. A facing is more suitable for woven fabric.
Oh my word, such a magnificent pattern that looks so beautiful on all the testers
