Material

Primary Fabric Use pre-quilted fabric, repurposed quilts, or medium- to heavier-weight woven fabrics with a smooth, presentable wrong side, such as double-faced or reversible fabrics.

Other Materials

  • Four (4) 7/8″ (22 mm) buttons or snaps
  • 3/8” (1 cm) double-fold bias tape (finished width after folding) in the following lengths:
  • For binding the thigh-length jacket and pocket edges and using Hong Kong seam finishes

For a short-length or hip-length jacket, reduce the amount by 1/2 yard (0.4 meter).

For binding the thigh-length jacket and pocket edges only (without using Hong Kong seam finishes)

For a short-length or hip-length jacket, reduce the amount by 1/8 yard (0.2 meter).

Alternatively, make your own 1 1/2″ (3.8 cm) wide bias strips from very lightweight woven fabric, such as batiste, voile, lawn, or lightweight quilting cotton. Follow the bias tape tutorial at itch-to-stitch.com/biastape. You will need approximately 30″ × 30″ (75 cm × 75 cm) of fabric if using Hong Kong seam finishes, or 23″ × 23″ (58 cm × 58 cm) without Hong Kong seam finishes.

Fabric Requirements

Most natural fibers shrink in the wash; be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk.

How to choose your size

  1. Determine if you should use the regular bust front pieces or the full-bust front pieces—subtract the circumference of your over bust from the circumference of the fullest part of your bust. If the rounded difference is 3″ (7.5 cm) or less, use regular bust; if it is more than 3" (7.5 cm), use full bust.

  2. Compare your bust circumference (fullest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Using the corresponding row for your bust (regular bust or full bust), choose the size that best fits your bust. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.

  3. Compare your waist circumference (narrowest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that best fits your waist. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.

  4. Compare your hip circumference (widest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that fits your hip best. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.

  5. It’s OK to use different sizes for the bust, waist and hip. The instructions for blending sizes are included in the pattern.

  6. If you are taller or shorter than 5’6” (168 cm), you should consider lengthening or shortening the garment. The instructions for lengthening or shortening are included in the pattern.
