Material

Primary Fabric Use light to medium-weight woven fabric without stretch or with minimal stretch, such as shirting, broadcloth, linen, satin, peach skin and crepe. Note that the wrong side of the fabric could show as you move around in the dress; keep that in mind when choosing your fabric.

Lining Washable choices are cotton batiste and cotton lawn. For dry-clean garments, use Ambiance lining, polyester lining, China silk or charmeuse. Lining fabric is for pocket bags.

Interfacing Use lightweight woven or weft-insertion interfacing.

Other Material

  • One 22“ (56 cm) invisible zipper
  • One set of size 1 hook and eye
  • 80“ (203 cm) of straight fusible stay tape (or you may cut your own using lightweight woven fusible interfacing on the straight grain)
  • One sew-on snap fastener (Optional)

Fabric Requirements

Most natural fibers shrink in the wash; be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk.

I made this pattern for my daughter in a mid weight crepe and we are both very happy with it. The cup sizes made fitting easy, there is no gaping in the front and the skirt looks like a wrap but without the wardrobe malfunctions. Added 10cm to the length, lined the skirt and removed 4 cm from CB bodice length. Just about the make one for myself. Great pattern.

I’ve spent hours trying to make this dress fit. I’ve cut a size 12 C, according to my measurements and the listed measurements, but I’ve had to take in the bodice side seams a lot and raise the bust darts. I have compared the front bodice pieces to a Vogue pattern and the Petaluma is a lot bigger! The waist line of the skirt is way too big, I can’t get it to fit properly, it has probably stretched with all the messing around I’ve had to do. I’ve not prepared to spend any more time on the fit, I may make it into a skirt, but I’m done! From my experience a wrap dress is best made from a knit. I love the look of the dress, so I’m disappointed.

I am sorry to hear that the dress didn’t fit you. The pattern was drafted for woven fabric so it’s not appropriate for knit fabric. You would be happier if you find a wrap dress pattern specifically designed for knit fabric.

Very well written and looks great on

I don’t know why the pattern is written unlined, as most wovens with that level of drape are going to need a layer underneath. Regardless, I made this with a 4″ longer skirt than the pattern and lined and it turned out to be a pretty accurate fit, as well as being easy to put together. My biggest trouble was finding a long enough zipper locally. I like it! And it has pockets. I will be making one for my much bustier MIL next.

How to choose your size

  1. Determine your cup size—subtract the circumference of your over bust from the circumference of the fullest part of your bust. If the rounded difference is 1″ (2.5 cm), use A cup; 2″ (5 cm), use B cup; 3″ (7.5 cm), use C cup; 4″ (10 cm), use D cup; 5″ (12.5 cm), use DD cup.
  2. After determining the cup size, compare your bust circumference (fullest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Using the corresponding row for your cup, choose the size that best fits your bust. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  3. Compare your waist circumference (narrowest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that best fits your waist. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  4. Compare your hip circumference (widest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that fits your hip best. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  5. It’s OK to use different sizes for the bust, waist and hip. The instructions for blending sizes are included in the pattern.
  6. If you are taller or shorter than 5’6” (168 cm), you should consider lengthening or shortening the garment. The instructions for lengthening or shortening are included in the pattern.
