Finished Garment Measurements

Choosing Your Size

  1. Determine your cup size—subtract the circumference of your over bust from the circumference of the fullest part of your bust. If the rounded difference is 1″ (2.5 cm), use A cup; 2″ (5 cm), use B cup; 3″ (7.5 cm), use C cup; 4″ (10 cm), use D cup; 5″ (12.5 cm), use DD cup.
  2. After determining the cup size, compare your bust circumference (fullest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Using the corresponding row for your cup, choose the size that best fits your bust. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  3. Compare your waist circumference (narrowest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that best fits your waist. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size.
  4. Compare your hip circumference (widest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that fits your hip best. If you are in between sizes, choose the smaller size.
  5. It’s OK to use different sizes for the bust, waist and hip.
  6. If you are taller or shorter than 5’6” (168 cm), you should consider lengthening or shortening the dress (see instructions for details).

I highly recommend that you check your fit by making a test garment with inexpensive fabric that has similar weight and drape as your final garment fabric.

Primary Fabric Use stable, light to medium-weight, woven fabric with a crisp drape. Linen, broadcloth, jacquard, lightweight denim are great choices. Beware that the wrong side of primary fabric is slightly visible through the bottom four grommet holes.

Lining Use stable, lightweight woven fabric, such as lawn, batiste, voile and Bemberg lining.

Interfacing Use light to medium weight fusible woven or weft insertion interfacing.

Other Materials

  • Eight (8) 3/8“ (1 cm) grommets and corresponding tool to install them (3/8" / 1 cm is the inside diameter of the grommet)
  • Two (2) pieces of 30“ (76.2 cm) long by 3/4“ (1.9 cm) wide light to medium weight fusible woven or weft insertion interfacing for zipper and pocket openings. No pattern pieces are included; however, the interfacing requirement below covers the amount needed.
  • 16“ (40 cm) or longer invisible zipper
  • One set of size 1 hook and eye
  • Optional: 65“ (165 cm) long by 3/8“ (1 cm) wide of purchased cording or cotton twill tape as drawstring—pattern piece is included to make one, but you can use a purchased one if you so desire.
  • Optional: Two cord ends for 3/8“ (1 cm) cords

Fabric Requirements

Most natural fibers shrink in the wash; be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk.

I made it without the grommets and string and made the v insert a little higher. I’m very pleased with how it turned out.

Oia is unique dress for the summer! I love the front lace detail and pockets of course! Time consuming but not too hard to sew 🙂
