Kathryn Top & Dress can be made casual or slightly more formal depending on the fabric used. When made with a cotton jersey or interlock fabric, the top can be paired with your favorite shorts or jeans for a perfect summer outfit. When made with a slinky knit, Kathryn can be your go-to dress for a date night out. The three sets of pleats along the round neckline provides interest to an otherwise simple garment. An empire-waist seam visually elongates your legs, yet the natural waist is shaped, so your curves are not buried. There’s no sleeve to sew, but your upper arm is covered by the extended shoulder.

Kathryn Top & Dress features:

  • Wide, round neckline with six pleats
  • Empire-waist seam to visually elongate your legs
  • Shaped at natural waist to show your curves
  • Extended shoulders covering your upper arms
  • Lined upper front
  • Options to make a dress or a top
  • A-line flared skirt ends at the knee
  • Layers feature–print only the sizes you need

Material

Primary fabric Light to medium light-weight knit fabric with 60% to 100% two-way or four-way stretch is ideal. Jersey, interlock and French terry are great choices. If you use fabric with less stretch, you may choose a larger size. Conversely, if you use fabric with more stretch, you may choose a smaller size. The same fabric is used to line the top front. However, if your knit fabric is on the heavier side, you may choose to line the top front with a lighter-weight knit fabric. Jersey and tricot are great choices.

Facing Fabric A front neckline facing is used to support the pleats. This facing uses a stable woven fabric. Quilting cotton, light-weight twill, muslin and light-weight broad cloth are great choices. Do not use a loose weave woven or a fabric that tends to expand such as linen. Do not use knit fabric.

Interfacing Use light-weight woven or weft insertion fusible interfacing.

Other Materials

  • 7" (18 cm) piece of woven single fold bias tape
  • 7" (18 cm) of bias fusible tape or bi-stretch interfacing

Tools

  • Ball-point or stretch machine needles
  • Walking foot for your sewing machine (optional)
  • Serger machine (optional)
  • Cover stitch machine to finish your hems (optional)
  • Twin needles to finish your hems (optional)
  • Wooly nylon thread to finish your hems (optional)

Fabric Requirements

Most natural fibers shrink in the wash; be sure to have enough fabric. The requirements below assume that the fabric is already pre-shrunk.

  1. Lyn

The Kathryn is a great fitting tee with lovely details. It’s an easy sew and goes with almost anything.

  2. Emily

I am actually wearing one of my makes of this (as a top) right now, so I think I like the pattern. Flattering and comfortable, looks finished enough for work. I love that the neckline facings are woven and ROCK SOLID. No sagging or drooping with the very light rayon knit that I used. The bodice double layer feels a bit thick on the regular t shirt weight knit version I made, but feels fine with light weight rayon. Looking forward to making more!

  3. Dana

    Simple and elegant.

  4. Anonymous

I found the neckline too broad for my liking.

  5. Martha

Super easy to see and wear

  6. Courtney

Very easy and super cute! I have two dresses done already and will definitely keep using it!

  7. Diane

The Katherine top is another beautiful pattern from Itch to Stitch. I was looking for a summer jersey top that was pretty and flattering and the Katherine was a perfect choice. The instructions (as always!) were excellent. The pleats may look a bit tricky but the construction was very straight forward. I’ve already made two and have plans for a few more!

  9. Suzy Hattaway

I’ve just finished my second Katherine top and gave several more planned for the summer. I wanted a pretty jersey summer top with some interesting features and this one is absolutely perfect. Looks lovely with skirts and trousers and looks very pretty under a cardigan. Instructions (as always) were superb.

  10. Marie

I actually haven’t downloaded it yet; I wish I could have it printed full size. My printer only handles 8×11.

  11. Anonymous

    Easy to follow instructions.

  20. Christina

    Love the neckline on this.

  21. Elizabeth

I love the pattern & detailed instructions. It is so easy to download & print. I have a mac, however & haven’t figured how to just print my size but it’s not a problem. Thanks again & I love supporting indie business!

Hi Elizabeth, you probably opened it on the Safari browser only, so the layers feature is not available. You have to download the file to your computer (there’s download icon on the upper right of the browser). Then you can open it up in Adobe Acrobat Reader, where you can use the layers feature. Give that a try! ?

  22. Betty

    Awesome

  23. Tiffany

The size chart is perfect for this dress

  24. itzdiane

This top is one I’m getting ready to make again for the Sew Seasonal Wardrobe contest. I’ve made both the top and dress version of this pattern already and both are my favorite things to wear! This style is so very comfortable and I love the detail on the neck. Kennis makes top notch patterns and her instructions are detailed enough that anyone could sew up any of her patterns. Don’t hesitate to buy this one!
