This is the first pattern I’ve bought online that has each step explained so well. I’m a beginner, but could sew this dress as she has explained each step in detail. I am 5ft 2.5 inches, so I shortened the bodice by an inch. I have made 2 in size 4, perfect fit! Very comfortable to wear and hides my momma pooch well

  2. Anonymous

Very practical design and I love the sizing and amount of ease included in the pattern.

  3. Karen

Love the dress. Can you use the top portion as a blouse.?

    • Kennis Wong

Sure. But there’s also a shirt length as an option.

  4. Anonymous

Such a flattering dress easy to follow instructions

  5. Robyn

Lovely style for my body shape. Plenty of variations to choose from for multi seasonal clothing options.

  6. Ellen

The muslin turned out wonderfully, but I may not make this until spring. Then who knows. I may make several! I own 8 of your patterns so far. The four that I have now used the most I purchased through other outlets and so cannot review here. However, I’ve found Itch-to-stich patterns to be excellent. They are exquisitely designed, perfectly sized and drafted, and everything always falls into place at the end. I am so used to these patterns that I make my standard personal adjustments and voila, the end product is excellent. I have made the Montana shirt four times, in two sizes (to accommodate layering vs. no layering) and I’ll make it again and again with some variation. When I am shopping for patterns I will always opt for Itch-to-Stitch over another pattern when I find two patterns that meet my requirements. Just for the record, the bust options for those of us who are not your standard bust size and the layering are two of the attractive features about these patterns.

This is a very well drafted pattern and my first make of an Itch to Stitch pattern. It will not be my last! I made a straight size 2 but next time I will grade it a bit larger in the hips. I did a toile of the bodice, but not the skirt, since that is the area I have the most difficulty fitting. The bodice was perfect (although I did replace the under bust gathers with darts and drafted an armscye to fit a regular shirt sleeve, not the puff sleeve provided in the pattern). Based on the finished garment measurements, I thought the fit through the hips would be ok without doing a test garment. However, I made the dress in a medium weight linen plus lined it with batiste and with the added pocket fabric, the fit was a bit snug. I managed to get the extra room needed by doing some creative robbing of fabric from the front skirt facings. With the lining, no one will ever know except me. I would buy nothing but your patterns from now on if you had a wider selection of styles. I would love to see you offer a basic sheath dress with a full range of cup sizes.

Keep up the good supply of lovely patterns at such reasonable prices. Even me as a senior in my 70’s enjoy your selection of garments.

  9. Carol

A simple button through dress pattern that can be adapted for a variety of looks.

  10. Claire

Fit is amazing. Only top/dress I’ve ever bought and a straight cut size fits without a lot of alterations. Instructions are very clear to follow, and it’s a super flattering garment too. I initially bought this but put it to one side thinking it was probably just another shirt dress, but saw Karina (liftingpinsandneedles) make it and following her advice to extend the gathering ‘area’ by an inch to either side, I now have an amazing tnt pattern. The ‘flat’ waistband under the empire line makes all the difference so I can see that have a small waist rather than a sack of spuds around my middle which you’d get if it flared straight from under the bust. Thank you!

  11. Elizabeth

This is a beautiful dress. Love the fit and I think it is so comfortable. Didn’t have any problem sewing it.

  12. Eileen Gazey

This is a really pretty dress and, like all ITS patterns, well drafted and easy to make up. I can see this becoming a regular in my summer plans.

  13. Grace

    Beautiful dress

  14. Ronda

Just have to see the buttons on. Fit is great. Clear instructions.

Lovely pattern. Would rather have printed pattern

  16. melodie.kunegel

I’ve already made two versions of this top. Very elegant fit

  17. julie

Lovely pattern and easy to follow

  18. Kerolie

I found the sizing runs a bit small. I have previously made another dress from itch-to-stitch and had no issues with sizing.
This dress however does not match the published measurements for sizing, recommend going up 1 or 2 sizes to ensure a good fit that doesn’t look like it is trying to burst free.

  19. Loretta

Love the pattern, great site. A+A+A+A+

  20. Michelle

Great pattern with clear and simple directions. I made the blouse out of handkerchief linen before making the dress out of my expensive Liberty of London Tana lawn. I only had to make a few minor adjustments (I’m a 34E bust). I will add lining to the skirt when I make the dress and may change the gathering under the bust to a couple of darts for a smoother look for a fuller bust. Although the pattern doesn’t call for top stitching, I added it on the collar and waist band. It takes it from “homemade” to “handmade.”

  21. Suzanne

I am sewing the shirt at the moment. I love that you can pick the bust size and the pattern size since it saves a lot of tracing. I am not very good on the computer so my husband had to print the pattern. It took him some time to get it done. I don’t know what I would have done on my own.

  22. Elaine

The sizing does agree with the published measurements. I was worried it would run large (like “the Big 4”) but the size chart is accurate. Thank you! I wish I had chosen a larger cup size; I selected my usual bra size, but would like a little more room through the bust.

  23. Esther

Detailed explanation. Pattern prefect. I recommend you.

  24. Kristin

I love the pattern! The instruction is one of the best I´ve ever had – very clear and comprehensive. Because of the number of parts it is not a quick sew but easy to handle even for an advanced beginner like me. Next time (yes, I will definitely sew another one) I will play with the collar and sew rounded corners. I am really happy with this very feminine top.

  25. Anne

Love this pattern have made a blouse and a dress. Made size 8 with just a slight adjustment to shorten for my 5ft 1in lack of height, otherwise fitted perfectly. I also like the fact that I learn a new technique with almost every one of your patterns.

  26. annick_campenaerts

The Chai dress is so elegant! I definitely have to make the shirt option. The good instructions make the difficult parts of the pattern really clear. A must have …

  27. dalaimarmot

Oh my, what a great result! As a 4 months in sewist, I was able to make this with no problem. I used a stretch poplin and made the dress with sleeves. The cup option saved my life! This was the first time I sewed something and didn’t need to make fit adjustments. As a short torso-ed D cup with narrow shoulders, such was my lot in life. No more! The only thing that would make this better would be a long sleeve option for chillier months. I can’t wait to make the shirt next.

  28. Leanne Miller

I was impressed with the fit of the garment. Not having made a garment with cup sizes included in pattern pieces before this made the fit a pleasure to sew. Instructions included made it relatively easy to sew, having a different method of sewing on the collar made it easier to understand, the finished detail was definately worth the effort. Options included make this a versatile pattern, choosing the right fabric you can wear this garment from a more formal occasion to casual wear.

How to choose your size

  1. Determine your cup size—subtract the circumference of your over bust from the circumference of the fullest part of your bust. If the rounded difference is 1″ (2.5 cm), use A cup; 2″ (5 cm), use B cup; 3″ (7.5 cm), use C cup; 4″ (10 cm), use D cup; 5″ (12.5 cm), use DD cup.
  2. After determining the cup size, compare your bust circumference (fullest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Using the corresponding row for your cup, choose the size that best fits your bust. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  3. Compare your waist circumference (narrowest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that best fits your waist. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  4. Compare your hip circumference (widest part) to the “Body Measurements” table. Choose the size that fits your hip best. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size if you like your garment more fitted; otherwise, choose the bigger size.
  5. It’s OK to use different sizes for the bust, waist and hip. The instructions for blending sizes are included in the pattern.
  6. If you are taller or shorter than 5’6” (168 cm), you should consider lengthening or shortening the garment. The instructions for lengthening or shortening are included in the pattern.
